A STUDY OF ELECTRIC POWER SAFETY: BANGLADESH WOVEN GARMENTS INDUSTRIES PERSPECTIVE

The study was carried out to assess the status of electric power safety in Bangladesh woven garment industries. Garment industries provide jobs to more than 4 million workers mostly women and also support an additional 23 million people. It contributes about three fourth of country’s total export earnings. Safe and quality power supply is essential for smooth operation, production of quality goods including safety of the workers. The nonstandard design or faults of power system may cause –injuries, fatalities and fire resulting injuries and deaths of workers, damage of goods, machinery, and buildings. The findings were analysed, summarised and were presented in the report on the status of the power related safety issues and handling the emergencies during accidents and presented a few recommendations to improve power safety and emergency management. Government, BGMEA and the associated authorities may give due considerations on the findings and do the needful to improve the existing safety standards of the power system, emergency response plans for the smooth and safe development of the sector.
