ADVOCACY AND NETWORKING PROGRAM TO ENSURING THE ACCESSES RIGHTS OF FISHER FOLK SOCIETY ON WATER RESOURCES AT NETRAKONA

A non-profitable and non-government organization,
Bangladesh Resource Center for Indigenous Knowledge (BARCIK) works together to
established sustainable agricultural in Bangladesh since 2007. From the very
beginning of the BARCIK activities in Atapara upazila of Netrakona district,
BARCIK advocacy team was trying to resolve the access right of fisher folk
society on the beel Karmoil. BARCIK belief that every person has the access
rights on natural resources. For the interest of the BARCIK activities
performed in local level they were communicate several times with fisher folk
society, local government body, elite persons, farmers group, teachers, Imams,
Fisheries Officials, and different stakeholder of the project area. They have
made different dialogue sessions, advocacy and networking with different stakeholder and local
government body to ensuring the accesses rights of fisher folk society on water
resources at Atpara, Netrakona. BARCIK, first time succeeded in this regards in
2007. More than 15 nos. fisher folk household was directly benefited through
the advocacy and network process. This report
highlights how advocacy and networking can be an effective element of support
for development human rights in fisheries sector.
