ASSESSMENT OF DESHI JUTE (Corchorus capsularis L.) SEED QUALITY AS AFFECTED BY STORAGE PERIODS

Maintaining long term seed health in the storage condition is critical for jute production. However, seed can still lose its quality in the storage condition for several reasons. So, this study was carried out to inspect the quality of deshi jute variety (Corchorus capsularis) seeds during long term seed storage. Experiments were conducted on August 2013 to January 2020 at seed laboratory of Jute Research Regional Station, Mahiganj, Rangpur. Two deshi jute (C. capsularis L.) varieties, viz., BJC-2142 (V₁) and CVL-1 were used in this study. Seed variety and seed storage period showed significant effect on different seed quality parameters. The highest seed germination and field emergence were recorded in T₇ (2019-20) treatment however, 1000-seed weight, seed vigour and seed moisture content was found higher in T₁ (2013-20)treatment. Deshi jute variety BJC-2142 (V₁) showed the higher seed germination, field emergence and seed vigour whereas CVL-1 (V₂) had the higher moisture content and 1000-seed weight. In addition, variety rather than length of storage period significantly affected in the interaction between variety and treatments.
