AVI-FAUNA OF HAZARIKHIL WILDLIFE SANCTUARY OF BANGLADESH

A study was conducted from July, 2012 to 2014, to observe the bird’s species composition and population of Hazarikhil wildlife sanctuary, Chattogram. Transect method has been used to identify bird the species. A total of 123 species of bird belonging to 17 order 44 families and 92 genera were recorded during the study period. Maximum numbers of bird species were recorded in the families’ respectively - Columbidae (eight species), Cuculidae (six species) Strigidae (five species), Accipitridae (five species), Ardidae (five species) and Nectariniidae (four species). Hunting and poaching, human-wildlife conflict, use of poison for fishing, road through the forest, forest fire, encroachment for gardening and grazing were identified as major threats to the avian species of this sanctuary.
