EVALUATION OF EXTRACTIVE FROM MAHOGANY (Swietenia macrophylla) SEEDS AGAINST WOOD DECAYING FUNGI

Many
plant derivatives substances have fungitoxic, pecticidal and insecticidal
ability. Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla)
seeds are very popular in this respect for a decade of time. In this study to
investigate the fungi toxic activities of mahogany (S. macrophylla) seeds against wood decay fungi. Organic solvents
were used to remove extractives from mahogany seeds sample. The solvents were
used ethyl alcohol and methyl alcohol. The solvents were removed by
roto-evaporation. The toxicity of various extracts concentration was used in
laboratory condition and natural condition to prove the effectiveness against
fungal growth in the test sample. Three different concentration solvents were
applied both in laboratory condition and natural condition. Both results
revealed that highest concentration of ethanol extract (30%) is most effective
against fungus growth. From this study, it was summarized that mahogany seed
extract is potential source of eco-friendly wood preservatives.
