FARMER’S AWARENESS ON FOOD SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION

The study was conducted mainly the farmers’ level of knowledge about food safety and environmental pollution due to unsafe use of pesticides in vegetable production and the factors influencing it and explored suitable ways of reducing their uses. Data were collected from randomly selected 120 farmers of Subarnapur village, Sadar south Upazilla in Comilla district of Bangladesh through face-to-face interviews, direct observations and personal conducted during 5 to 15 January 2014. It showed that Agrochemicals are the result of modern technology that depends on inorganic fertilizers and pesticides. Over use of these chemicals have severe effects on environment that may lead to an immediate and long term effects. Investigating farmers’ awareness of agrochemicals residues and their behaviors regarding application is important in order to reduce human factors that negatively affect agricultural safety. This study focuses on a summary of both national and international studies regarding the effects of pesticide and chemical fertilizer residues on nature, as well as farmers’ awareness of these effects. This research incorporates the actual performance of farmers of Comilla district on the issue of agrochemicals.
