Perilla frutescens (L) Britton commonly called Perilla or Korean perilla is highly nutritious vegetable edible oil crop. In Bangladesh in favor of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University recently this crop registered in name of SAU Perilla-1(Golden Perilla BD) as an edible oil crop by National Seed Board (NSB) under Ministry of Agriculture. It is primarily found in Korean cuisine as well as other Asian traditions. Perilla seed oil content 91% unsaturated fatty acid which of this more than 50% (54-64%) alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3 fatty acid). Bangladesh is predominantly deficit with decreasing trend in edible oil seed production. The area under oil seed cultivation is decreasing over the years due to various economic and technical reasons. In Bangladesh naturally oil crops are grown and harvested in Robi (October to March) faces severe competition for available land with other crops like Boro rice, wheat, pulses and vegetables. Perilla is short day annual crop in kharif-2 or summer season with 1.3-1.5 t/ha yields potentials. So, successful introduction of the crop in Kharif-2 season (Mid July to Mid-November) could have been served not only as an additional member-crop in minimizing deficit of the national quality edible oil-seed production for the nation but also saving money for importing edible oils in Bangladesh and would serve as a good source of fire wood. The aim of this review is to know extensive information about Perilla and the causes of introduction of Perilla in Bangladesh aspects.
