IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON ENVIRONMENT AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS IN THE COASTAL REGION OF BANGLADESH

The objective of this study was to examine the impact of climate change induced natural disaster on coastal environment and socio-economic status. This study relied on questionnaire survey and focus group discussion, where 100 respondent’s answers were collected randomly from the Gabura union of Shymnagor upazilla in the Satkhira district through a defined questionnaire during the period of July to December 2016. Natural disaster was a common feature of the study area. Qualitative field data represented that increased climate change impact results in the reduction of agricultural production, vegetation growth, hampering ecosystem and biodiversity, deteriorating natural environment and creating negative impact on the socio-economic conditions of the study area people. Moreover, in maximum cases, people of the study area are changing their occupation, such as farmer to day labourer and shrimp farming, etc., including cultural changes. Different kindsof diseases are also spreading and food habit changing. In this perspective, Government and local NGOs should work together in order to improve this situation.
