USE OF CBLT AT INTERMEDIATE LEVEL IN BANGLADESH: A TENTATIVE STUDY OF TEACHING EFL ‘WRITING’

The
current study depicts the efficacy of utilizing Competency Based Language
Teaching (CBLT) to teach standard ‘writing’ skill at the higher secondary level
in Bangladesh. The researchers intended to find out the efficacies of CBLT in
Bangladesh perspective. The study synchronizes the CBLT approach with
content-based instruction and the use of digital contents with familiar
contexts to facilitate the teaching and learning of ‘writing’. In order to
that, the researchers adopted ‘interviews’, ‘classroom observation’ and two
‘questionnaire surveys’ as the research instruments. The key participants of
the study were five EFL teachers and 100 students of five intermediate colleges
of Dhaka division in Bangladesh. The researchers have found some efficacies and
also few limitations to apply CBLT in the EFL class rooms at intermediate
level. The students admitted their comforts and better understanding for
learning ‘writing’ in CBLT approach with realia and digital contents. Finally,
it was found that CBLT method could not bring a huge success but functioned
better than existing CLT approach. At the end, few commendations have been left
to achieve the best outcomes from CBLT in terms of teaching EFL writing skill
in Bangladesh.
